Dr. Lily Rieks is GVEC’s intern for the 2025-2026 year. Dr. Rieks grew up on a 65-acre horse farm. In addition to horses, they had various animals – dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, goats…you name it! She has ridden horses since before she could walk and grew up working with young horses and training them to ride. She enjoys taking the time to earn a horse’s trust, leading to a cooperative working relationship. Dr. Rieks obtained her Bachelors in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Alfred University in 2020. While at Alfred, she competed with their Western IHSA riding team where she gained a love for the Reining discipline. Dr. Rieks then attended the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. While her initial goal was to work in small animal emergency medicine, she realized on the first equine rotation that the equine world is where she was meant to be.
Dr. Rieks shares a home with her fiance Jason, her 4 dogs (Lena, Izzy, Nova, and Fred), and her cat Reggie. She enjoys hiking, camping, and reading. She hopes to own horses again and add riding back into her list of hobbies!
